2006 SEASON

David FerryDIRECTOR'S NOTES

Talley's Folly
By Lanford Wilson
July 20-30, 2006

Directed by David Ferry

I had the great good fortune to work with Lanford Wilson in New York as an actor in the premiere of his play A Tale Told, which was the third installment of his Talley Trilogy. Lanford wrote the part of Sally’s brother Timmy with an eye to me playing the role. It was a true honour

That play takes place the same evening as Talley’s Folly up at the main house where all the family have been arguing about business, Sally and her suitor Matt, and where they find out at the end of Act One that Timmy has been killed in action on Saipan in the Pacific. At the end of A Tale Told Sally appears fresh from her meeting with Matt, which is the action of the play you will see tonight.

Trish Hawkins, who originated the role of young Sally played her in A Tale Told as well and every night when she appeared, glowing from her meeting with Matt, the audience (faithful Wilson fans to the core) would audibly sigh.

I had read Talley’s Folly of course, but it wasn’t until directing this production that I really understood their feelings.

Irene Poole and Alon Nashman in Talley's FollySally and Matt are both fabulous creations. They are, like many of us, bruised, damaged from sad pasts, but so very human and in love, that we all want them desperately to end up together.

With the extraordinary Irene Poole and Alon Nashman, two of the best actors we have in Canada, I am again honoured to be working on Mr. Wilson’s material. I am certain that these actors will make you sigh too.

Enjoy
