2000 YOUNG COMPANY
ARTSREACH

THE EMPEROR PENGUIN
Written and Directed by Matthew John Lundvall

The Emperor PenguinResurgence's Young Company toured The Emperor Penguin, a play for children, across York Region to libraries, daycares and camps from August 8 to 25, 2000. This magical piece of children's entertainment touched on various conflicts that children are often faced with, including working together and accepting others despite their differences. The play was highly interactive as the actors call upon the audience to take part in the story.

In addition to the tour, the Young Company staged three public performances on August 8, 15 & 22, 2000 at the York Shakespeare Festival performance site at Fairy Lake.

The Young Company was founded in 1999 to provide young people who have a desire to pursue a career in the arts with hands on experience as performers, technicians and theatre administrators. Some of the goals of this program included:
The Apprentice Program

  • to allow apprentices the chance to learn from established and professional artists;
  • to provide classes in areas such as voice, movement & acting;
  • to instill a knowledge of how a professional production works;
  • to create an environment where young people can begin to make contacts & gain professional experience that will be valuable in establishing themselves as professional artists.

The Apprentice Program was directed by Co-Artistic Director, Matthew John Lundvall. A graduate of Ryerson Theatre School, Mr. Lundvall has performed in theatres across southern Ontario, including: The Ford Centre for the Performing Arts, Young Peoples Theatre, Thousand Islands Playhouse and the Brockville Arts Centre. Workshop Coordinators also included Lee Wilson and Anthony Leo.
