The Senior Youth Theatre Conservatory is an exciting summer school program that provides secondary school students with an intensive professional theatre training experience. The only program of its kind in Ontario, successful participants will be awarded both a Grade 11 and Grade 12 Drama in the Community credit (ADC30 & ADC40) towards their secondary school diploma, approved by the Ontario Ministry of Education and administered through The Country Day School in King City. The curriculum was created by professional theatre artists and educators with the following goals in mind:

  • To provide young people who have a desire to pursue a career in the theatre with hands on experience as performers, designers and stage managers.
  • To allow students to learn from established and professionally trained artists who maintain high profile careers in the Canadian theatre/film industry.
  • To provide classes in areas ranging from movement & acting to scenic & lighting design to the business of theatre.
  • To instill a knowledge of how a professional theatre production works.
  • To create an environment where young people can begin to make contacts and gain professional experience that will be valuable in later establishing themselves as professional artists.

A main component of the program was participating in a theatre production for young audiences, performed at the annual York Shakespeare Festival at Fairy Lake in Newmarket, under the direction of a professional director. Up to fourteen students (twelve actors, one designer and one stage manager) were selected by audition and/or interview. This was a full-time commitment that ran from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday to Friday.

Successful applicants received a FULL SCHOLARSHIP.
